Expats Want to Know: What is the USA Working Lifestyle Like?

Have you ever thought about coming to live and work in America?  You have probably heard legends about America’s wealth and how anyone can become rich by living out the American dream.  It is true that America is a land of opportunity.  However, what is the working lifestyle really like the USA?  Is it vastly different from your own country?

It depends on where you are coming from.  Some expatriates from the Middle East or Central America have found the typical American work schedule to be too intense.  On the other hand, expatriates from the east may tend to look down on the classic American work ethic.  Most agree, however, that when it comes to appointments, Americans always prefer that the parties be present on time.  The American working lifestyle also favors professional appearances, though smaller companies may prefer casual dress.  Some high-ranking workers may be called upon to give speeches to others or sell services to a high profile client.  This is when professional dress and fluent speaking ability really matters.

America is currently in a recession and jobs are hard to come by, especially office jobs.  (Meanwhile, food services, manual labor and local stores tend to be hiring more often)  This is because many companies are downsizing and unemployed Americans are snatching up those office jobs whenever they become available.  This should emphasize the importance of finding a job in America long before you arrive.

Visas for working in America may be for exchange visitors, as well as skilled or unskilled employees.  Remember that you must have a working visa in order to make any money in the United States.  Working unlawfully in the United States, like illegal immigration, is a serious offense and punishable by arrest, deportation and permanent banning from the country.

Finally, give some attention to learning the idea of “personal space.”  Unlike in most European or Middle Eastern cultures, Americans demand adequate personal space in physical contact and in physical expressions of respect.  Americans usually want an arm’s length of space between strangers.  Anything closer, especially in a tense environment like the workplace, may be interpreted negatively.  Furthermore, kissing or hugging is usually not seen out in public, especially among new friends or complete strangers.  Inadvertently touching a stranger may provoke a reaction or uncomfortable stare, to which an apology is usually expected.  Handshakes usually suffice in professional situations.

America is indeed the land of opportunity and after a few months, it will be easy for you to absorb the American work style and to start thinking of your co-workers as your extended family.
