Living Overseas Abroad

Have you ever thought about traveling to another country?  Imagine how exotic your life would suddenly become-surrounded by foreign culture, people of other nations and entirely different perspectives on life.  It doesn't have to be a far-fetched dream.  You don't even have to be extremely wealthy to make this dream come true.  Some Americans have applied for jobs overseas while others have transferred to other countries at the request of their employer.

What should you know about living abroad overseas?  Is it a dream come true?  Is it more trouble than it's worth?  First of all, know that many individuals are flocking to the idea of inter-country traveling.  There are many citizens that now have dual citizenships or even multi-national citizenships.  If they want to stay in a country for an extended period of time sometimes by law they must become citizens of that country.  Sometimes what starts out a short-term trip eventually becomes a full-time residency.

The first step in deciding whether or not overseas living is for you is to research the country in question.  Does the country that has employment or other expatriate opportunities fulfill your lifestyle?  Will you be able to adjust to the culture of this new land?  What are your reasons for moving, and does this country specifically address your needs?  What about the cost of living?  What about the climate of the area?  Though you might not think it, your basic needs (comfort, economic stability, safety) are not guaranteed in every country.  Some countries might strictly be out of the question, unless of course you (and the family) are adventurers ready to adapt to any cultural or living situation.

You also have to consider whether or not you speak the language at a fluent level.  You can survive practically anywhere while on vacation knowing English and a few basic foreign words and phrases.  However, living day to day in a foreign country where only a handful of people understand you can become trying after while.  This may make you change your mind about some countries where English is a minority language.

When moving overseas you also have to consider the needs of your immediate and distant family members.  Will it be easy for friends or family to come visit you or vice versa?  When you live abroad, there are many challenges that you must face.  However, the rewards, when they are precisely what you plan for, are truly satisfying.
