Living Abroad Smart

Every one of us at some point in our lives dreams of what it might be like to live abroad in some exotic international destination where the locals are beautiful and luxury is affordable.  Whether it be to attend school and study overseas, work at a fantastic new job, retire with a need for less money, or working as a volunteer, the reality of living abroad is often a mix of culture shock, difficulty adjusting to the new way of life, or a complete disappointment that the new location is nothing like it was thought to be. This is why it is so important to carefully consider all the pros and cons of living abroad. Not only is this just a move to a new job or opportunity, it is often a complete change in culture and lifestyle. While some people believe a complete change is exactly what they need, the change they are considering may not be what is necessary to meet their long term goals.

A key consideration for anyone living abroad is health care. While that cottage on a remote beach may look very tempting, consider if you need to be close to a major city so you can continue your health care. It is no secret that health care costs are out of control in the United States and in other countries the same services are sometimes infuriatingly more affordable in comparison. Often private insurers in other countries offer more options for much less, in Mexico the costs are in the hundreds instead of thousands with special policies designed specifically for those living abroad.

The cost of living expenses, energy, food, and day-to-day needs are enough to push someone over the edge thinking the grass is definitely greener by living abroad. If you have more temperate conditions year-round, living abroad can mean that energy may cost less simply because of less usage let alone the underinflated price. When considering food and other daily necessities while living abroad, it is important to carefully consider what you buy and the protections in place for screening problems with produce or livestock. Unfortunately, some countries are lacking in their capacity to properly screen their agriculture for diseases and other issues.

All in all, it is most important to learn all you can about the new location before making the big move to live abroad. Most importantly, actually visit your new location before permanently deciding upon it. Some countries may not be as welcoming as you had previously dreamed and it is better to have all the reality checks possible during the planning stage instead of after arrival. Knowing all the ins and outs of the culture, manners, traditions, and the local history will greatly improve not only your respect for the new location, but also the respect of the locals around you for caring enough to learn about them.

If you do nothing else, learn the local language before living abroad. This is a key step that is necessary for survival while living abroad. Not only will it prove to help you in getting the best deal for your produce or housekeeper, it will also help you to get acquainted with your new neighbors and protect you from possible harm.
