What is an India Expat Lifestyle Like?

Many Americans are coming to live in India permanently as expatriates.  The first and foremost reason is because of the vastly different economy, which currently puts nearly 50 Rupees to one U.S. dollar.  Secondly, India is a home not too far away from home, at least in the sense that there is big business and plenty of modern conveniences.  Many domestic companies are actually looking into to international trade with India and are sending their employees to live and work in the country. Additionally, many American consultants, specialists, educators and trainers are now living in the second most populated country in the world.

Naturally, one of the first things you will notice about India is its vast and diverse population.  Not only will you see some Americans in the area, but you will also see Indian people returning from the Americas after having studied overseas.  You will immediately notice the large crowds and noise upon arrival, especially if you arrive in a major city.

Don’t be surprised if many of these strangers seem interested in talking to you.  It’s polite in this culture, and besides, many of these people are quite fascinated by tourists.  (Aren’t we all?)  It can be wearisome having to talk to so many people, especially if you are an introverted personality, so this will require some adjustment.  The Indian people are known to be very direct in conversation and some have the tendency to stare.  The reason why you are the center of attention can vary.  You might look like a tourist, or you might seem like a rich person who may be willing to give away free things.  On the other hand, you might just appear to be interesting and inadvertently invite natives over to you for pleasant conversation.

You may be surprised to see a certain level of poverty in India, which also explains why many people will single you out for attention.  However, don’t be alarmed by the big city areas.  There are some beautiful sides to India that cater to tourists and expats, the type of maharaja palace that you’ve heard so much about.  Take your time in exploring your new home and allow yourself time to recover from the “culture” shock.

Last but not least, remember to invest in good medical insurance that allows you to be treated inside and outside of India, depending on your preference. Moving to India is a big move, but one that can be of great financial and social benefit.
