If you are interested in traveling to India for permanent residence then there are a few questions that are probably on your mind.  Here are some frequently asked questions about the immigration process in India.

Q: Do I need a visa to get into India?
A:
Yes, most citizens of other countries will be required to have a visa for entry, including Americans.  The type of visa required will depend on the reason for your visit.  Tourists only require a six-month tourist visa.  However, if you plan on living in India as an expatriate then you will need a business, work or student visa for the needed time.  Americans can order a special 10-year visa for $150.  It is also recommended that you ask for a multiple entry visa for convenience.

Q: Do I need a passport and a visa?
A:
All foreign nationals must have their own country’s valid passport as well as an Indian visa.  A passport is an internationally recognized travel document that establishes nationality, identity and physical appearance.

Q: Is there any Visa on Arrival procedure in India?
A:
No.  All foreigners are urged to have a valid Indian visa before arriving.

Q: Are there any requirements of U.S. visitors?
A:
Yes, foreigners are required to comply with the specific purpose for which a visa was given.  For example, traveling to India for business and then spreading religious views (as if volunteering as a missionary) could be in violation of the visa agreement.

Q: Do I need to register in addition to attaining a visa?
A:
If you are seeking employment in India (or a student or a missionary) then you must register at the Foreigners Regional Registration Office within two weeks of your arrival.  The place you are staying may provide this option, but if not, you can register at the local police station.  Even if you are not working permanently in India, if you stay longer than 180 days, this is a requirement.

Q: What do I need to work in India?
A:
Foreigners must have a work permit in order to be employed in India.  This permit can be granted if an application is made to the local embassy (in India) along with proof of employment (or potential employment) and supporting documentation.

Q: Why is legal immigration from America to India so important?
A:
Illegal immigration into India is a serious problem and has resulted in outbreaks of violence and political turmoil internationally.  For your own safety and the pride of your country, respect the laws of the land.
