Expat Family Life – Preparing for a Whole New Experience

If you and your family are soon to be expatriates, it’s important that you’re all ready for the move. Your family life and the happiness of your loved ones is something that you should not take lightly. Instead, you should plan ahead and conduct sufficient research to ensure that the transition to another country goes smoothly.

The following article aims to help you understand what your family life will be like in India, Brazil and the USA.

Family Life in India

Like many countries, India is a place that values respect. If you want to ensure that your family settles down comfortably, you should explain to your loved ones the importance of respect within churches, mosques, temples and other public places. Your move should be an experience that your family can enjoy so it’s your responsibility to educate your loved ones about your new home.

In a traditional Indian family, the men make money and the women are homemakers. However, this doesn’t mean that the women within your family can’t work. These days, times seem to be changing and women are becoming increasingly common in the workplace.

Family Life in Brazil

The family lifestyle in Brazil may be a whole new experience for an expatriate. Brazilians place high value on family and kinship relations and often share time with family at restaurants, festivals and music gigs. As an expat travelling to Brazil, you and your family will need to grow accustomed to popular music styles such as choro, samba and bossa nova.

When you arrive in Brazil, you and your family will likely notice the hospitality of Brazilians. Since Brazilians are fun loving and friendly people, you and your loved ones should have no problems making friends with the locals.

Family Life in the USA

Since the US is such a diverse land and a melting pot of different cultures, races and religions, the family lifestyle varies from state to state. In some areas of America, families are highly religious and primarily Christian. However, there are many communities that seem apathetic to religion, especially any non-Christian faith.

If you’re bringing your children to the US, you’ll need to conduct some research and try and find a school where you feel your children will fit. The good news is, most schools in the US make it a point to promote tolerance and multicultural understanding so if your children are respectful, they should be respected in return.

As you can see, the family lifestyle clearly varies depending on where you live. As an expatriate family, the best thing you can do is know and understand the culture of your new country. If you stay optimistic and treat others with respect, you should be able to gel with citizens from any country in the world.
