Expat Job Healthcare

You may have heard a great deal about healthcare overseas, and how most countries have universal healthcare.  Healthcare is indeed a very complicated issue.  An even more complex thought is: what about coverage for expatriates?  Expat, or expatriate policies cover travelers and expatriates that are legal residents of a foreign country.  They may be multi-national or may belong exclusively to a foreign country like Canada, India or Mexico.  Sometimes traveling executives are given group insurance policies by their employer.  However, if this provision isn't in place then individuals must purchase an individual international medical policy.

These policies not only cover healthcare, clinic visits, drugs and surgery, but usually also cover emergency evacuation out of the country.  This type of policy calculates premiums based on the usual criteria you would expect from an insurance company.  Namely, the insured's age and claims history.

Plans may include worldwide coverage as well as worldwide coverage excluding the United States of America.  Wait a minute, is this fair?  Well, you can't blame the insurance companies for taking these drastic measures.  The price of healthcare in America is notoriously high-in fact, it is the most expensive coverage in the world.

Another benefit having an expat healthcare job is that these plans are globally portable.  That means they will always cover you, regardless of where you travel.  You could travel to the U.K. or Germany and back to Brazil, and never once be without coverage.  This is quite a privilege, especially considering that most normal American healthcare policies require you to work only through a network of pre-selected doctors and clinics.

The only catch to be aware of is that expat healthcare plans do not cover individuals when they have returned home to their native country.  Therefore, this policy would only be a smart investment if the insured is planning extensive overseas travel and planning to live in other countries for long periods of time.

What if you are traveling for only brief periods of time but spend most of your life in America?  Then it might better suit you to buy travel policies with healthcare coverage.  These policies mainly cover emergency situations overseas, such as evacuation to the nearest center of medical excellence in the vicinity.  These policies tend to be less costly and more specific than general expat insurance, anyway.  It may be the best buy for you.

All in all, it's comforting to know that insurance options exist no matter where in the world you go.
