Expat Insurance Medical

Expatriate insurance is a policy that specifically covers individuals who are traveling and or residing in another country.  A person that is covered for expat medical insurance usually has policies protecting him or her from financial loss or personal injury.  The most common types of insurance policies include personal property insurance, car insurance, liability insurance, emergency evacuation and medical coverage.  These are items that could be of interest to a traveler journeying to a far away place that may or may not have the everyday securities that Americans take for granted.  For instance, in some parts of the world there is an increased threat of war, terrorism, kidnapping, ransoming and other acts of violence.

One important part of your expat policy will be the exclusions section.  These are the acts or events that will not be covered by your insurance company.  The expat companies explain that some exclusions take into account 'fundamental risks.'  Namely, that traveling companies will not cover situations which the insured entered into knowing full well of the risks involved, or perhaps risks where there was no chance of recovery.  Additionally, some companies may put ordinary exclusions on their policies pertaining to acts of war, military or terrorist actions, and nuclear explosions.

These policies can be very broad or very specific, depending on the agreement the individual and the company reach.  You also have to be aware of a phrase that reads 'Directly or Indirectly as a result.'  This implies that if a loss occurs as the indirect case of an excluded item, the loss will still not be covered by the policy.  This is why the proximate cause is all the more important in expat coverage policies.

What about medical coverage overseas?  If you are not covered by a group medical insurance program (through your job) then you will have to look for an individual international medical policy.  The plans are especially for individuals who need worldwide medical protection.  They also cover emergency evacuation services due to physical threats or medical crisis.  Premiums for these plans are, ironically, usually more expensive for American than overseas.  These policies will be based on the typical criteria for insurance: policyholder's age, area of coverage and medical history.

The good news is that most international health insurance plans are globally reaching, in that they allow foreign nationals to move easily from one country to the next without any periods of missing coverage.  If you are a frequent traveler and multi-national citizens try looking into expatriate coverage for you and your family's benefit.
