Expatriates are individuals who are temporarily or permanently residing in a foreign country. This is a country other than that of the person's native country, the place they were born. Expatriates are usually temporary or full-time citizens of the second country they are living in. Whereas most countries require that individuals register as a citizen of the country if they plan to earn money or stay for a long period of time on the land, some countries actually require that they dissociate themselves from the previous country in order to enjoy full benefits of the country they currently live in.
What is expat family life today like? It can be challenging but rewarding under the right circumstances. If the family travels with the worker, then they get to see faraway lands and enjoy a vacation away from home more times a year than is typical. It is literally a home away from home, and can treat family members to many popular world-renowned attractions and very different cultures. Language barriers are not necessarily a disadvantage, but they do merit attention from the entire household. It's not enough for one person to be able to speak a minimal amount of the native tongue. The best scenario is that all members of the family learn a little bit about foreign culture and some common phrases for easier communication. The family of an expat may feel afraid to venture outside of the house out of embarrassment or miscommunication. Therefore it could help tremendously to train children and spouses in a few basic language lessons as you prepare to travel to another country.
